How to Charge a BMW iX or i4 at Tesla Superchargers

How to Charge a BMW iX or i4 at Tesla Superchargers

Since December 10, 2025, BMW iX and i4 owners can charge at Tesla Superchargers across North America using Plug & Charge via the My BMW app, powered by Shell Recharge. Once activated, your vehicle authenticates automatically when you plug in—no need to open an app at the charger.

Part of our complete guide to charging non-Tesla EVs at Superchargers.

At Velectr, we design EV charging hardware for real-world use. This guide covers the complete process: activating Plug & Charge, connecting at the stall, what speeds to expect, and how to handle common issues.

What You Need Before Your First Session

  • A Velectr NACS to CCS1 adapter — This connects your BMW's CCS1 port to Tesla's NACS Supercharger cable.
  • My BMW app with Shell Recharge activated — Download the My BMW app, set up your BMW Connected Drive account, and activate Shell Recharge as your charging provider. Enable Plug & Charge and add a valid payment method. This must be done before you arrive at the Supercharger.
Note for 2026 model year owners: Some 2026 BMW iX, i5 xDrive40, and i5 eDrive40 models required a spring 2026 software update to enable Supercharger access. If Plug & Charge isn't working, check with your dealer to confirm your software is up to date.
  • A compatible Tesla Supercharger — V3 and V4 stations are compatible. V4 stations have longer cables and higher power.

Step-by-Step: Charging Your BMW iX or i4 at a Tesla Supercharger

  1. Set up Plug & Charge before your first session.
Open the My BMW app, go to Charging settings, activate Shell Recharge integration, and enable Plug & Charge. Add a valid payment method. This only needs to be done once.
  2. Navigate to a supported Tesla Supercharger.
Use your BMW's built-in navigation, the My BMW app, or the Tesla Supercharger map to locate V3 or V4 Supercharger sites enabled for non-Tesla vehicles.
  3. Park and position the charging cable.
The BMW iX has its charge port on the rear-right side. The i4's charge port is also rear-right. Position the vehicle so the cable reaches comfortably.
  4. Connect the Velectr NACS to CCS1 adapter.
Attach the adapter to the Tesla Supercharger cable's NACS plug. The adapter clicks securely into place.
  5. Plug the adapter into your BMW's CCS1 port.
Open the charge port door and insert the adapter. The vehicle will recognize the connection.
  6. Charging starts automatically via Plug & Charge.
Your BMW communicates directly with the Supercharger through Shell Recharge. Authentication and billing happen automatically—no need to open any app at the charger.
  7. Monitor charging from the vehicle or app.
Charging status appears on the iDrive screen and the My BMW app.
  8. Once charging is complete.
Stop the session via the vehicle screen or charge port button. Disconnect the adapter from the vehicle first, then remove the adapter from the Tesla handle, then replace the Tesla handle in the charging station.

BMW Plug & Charge at Tesla Superchargers: Setup & Payment Method

BMW supports Plug & Charge at Tesla Superchargers through Shell Recharge, integrated into the My BMW app. Here's what happens:

  • The Supercharger and your vehicle exchange authentication certificates automatically
  • Your Shell Recharge payment method (set up in My BMW) is charged directly
  • Session details (kWh delivered, cost, duration) appear in the My BMW app

Just plug in and go. Make sure your payment method is current before road trips.

What Charging Speeds to Expect

BMW uses 400V architecture across the iX and i4 lineup:

  • BMW iX xDrive50: Up to 195 kW peak charging. At V3 Superchargers (250 kW max), expect real-world speeds of 150–195 kW. At V4 stations, similar or slightly higher.
  • BMW i4 eDrive40/M50: Up to 200 kW peak. Similar real-world Supercharger performance to the iX.

Because BMW uses 400V architecture (matching V3 Superchargers), there's no voltage conversion penalty. You'll see near-peak speeds unlike 800V vehicles that get throttled at V3 stations.

The iX xDrive50 (76.6 kWh usable) can go from 10% to 80% in approximately 30–35 minutes at a Supercharger.

Tesla Supercharging Membership (Optional Cost Savings)

Non-Tesla EV owners typically pay a higher per-kWh rate at Superchargers compared to Tesla vehicle owners. However, you can unlock Tesla owner pricing by purchasing a Supercharging Membership through the Tesla app.

Here's how it works:

  • Tesla charges non-members a premium per-kWh rate (varies by location, but typically 10–25% higher than member pricing)
  • The Supercharging Membership gives you the same per-kWh rate Tesla owners pay
  • One membership covers all vehicles on your Tesla account

How to sign up:

  1. Open the Tesla app
  2. Go to Charging
  3. Select Membership
  4. Follow the prompts to subscribe

Is the membership worth it? If you Supercharge more than 2–3 times per month, the savings on per-kWh pricing will likely exceed the membership cost. For road trippers and anyone without reliable home charging, it's a no-brainer. For occasional Supercharger use, calculate based on your local rates.

Note: The Supercharging Membership is separate from Plug & Charge. You authenticate via My BMW / Shell Recharge, but the membership pricing applies to your Tesla account.

Troubleshooting Common Issues

  • Session won't start?
Verify Plug & Charge is activated in the My BMW app under Shell Recharge settings. Try a different stall. Ensure your payment method is valid.
  • Charging speed seems slow?
BMW's 400V architecture works well with V3 Superchargers, so slow speeds usually indicate a busy station (power sharing) or high battery temperature. Try a different stall or wait for the battery to cool.
  • Adapter won't connect?
Ensure the adapter is fully seated on the Tesla cable before inserting into the vehicle. Don't force it. Check for debris.
  • Cable won't reach?
Try a different stall orientation. End stalls offer the most flexibility. V4 stations have longer cables.

⚡ Paying ~$0.35/kWh at Superchargers? Charge at home for ~$0.12/kWh.

Most BMW iX/i4 owners do 80% of their charging at home. If you have a Tesla Wall Connector or Destination Charger, the Velectr NACS to J1772 Adapter ($99.99) lets you plug in overnight — no app, no session fees. It pays for itself in weeks.

Important Tips for BMW Owners

  • Activate Plug & Charge at home.
Set up My BMW, activate Shell Recharge, and enable Plug & Charge before your trip.
  • Your 400V architecture is an advantage.
Unlike 800V vehicles, your BMW gets near-peak speeds at V3 Superchargers with no voltage conversion penalty.
  • Pre-condition the battery.
Set a Supercharger as your destination in BMW's nav. The car will pre-heat the battery.
  • Don't charge past 80%.
    Speeds drop significantly above 80%.
  • Carry your adapter.
Keep the Velectr NACS to CCS1 adapter in the car at all times.

Where the Velectr Adapter Fits In

The Velectr NACS to CCS1 adapter bridges the physical connection between Tesla's NACS Supercharger cable and your BMW's CCS1 port. Combined with BMW's Plug & Charge through Shell Recharge, the experience is seamless: plug in the adapter, connect to your car, and charging starts automatically.
