How to Charge a Nissan Ariya at Tesla Superchargers

Nissan Ariya owners can charge at Tesla Superchargers across North America through the NISSAN ENERGY Charge Network, managed via the MyNISSAN app. You'll use the app to initiate and pay for each session—it takes just a tap once you're connected.

Part of our complete guide to charging non-Tesla EVs at Superchargers.

At Velectr, we design EV charging hardware for real-world use. This guide walks you through setting up the MyNISSAN app for Supercharger access, connecting at the stall, what charging speeds to expect, and how to troubleshoot common issues.

Field note from Symon

The Ariya is a conservative charger — peak around 130 kW, less if the pack hasn't been pre-conditioned by routing to a fast charger in the nav. Nissan added Supercharger access later than most manufacturers, so the Plug & Charge experience is still maturing through MyNISSAN. The Velectr adapter is rated well above what the Ariya can pull through any V3 stall, which means real thermal headroom on warm days.

What You Need Before Your First Session

  • A Velectr NACS to CCS1 adapter — This connects your Ariya's CCS1 port to Tesla's NACS Supercharger cable. Nissan sells an OEM adapter through dealerships for $235, but any quality NACS-to-CCS1 adapter works—the Supercharger authenticates your vehicle, not the adapter. The Velectr adapter is $129.95 and meets the same electrical specifications (500A/1000V).
  • The MyNISSAN app installed and set up — Download the MyNISSAN app, create an account, and add a valid payment method. Activate the NISSAN ENERGY Charge Network within the app. This must be done before you arrive at the Supercharger.
  • A compatible Tesla Supercharger — V3 and V4 stations are compatible. V4 stations have longer cables and higher power.

Step-by-Step: Charging Your Nissan Ariya at a Tesla Supercharger

  1. Set up the MyNISSAN app before your first session.
Download the MyNISSAN app, create your account, add a payment method, and activate the NISSAN ENERGY Charge Network. This only needs to be done once.
  2. Navigate to a supported Tesla Supercharger.
Use the MyNISSAN app, your vehicle's built-in navigation, or the Tesla Supercharger map to locate V3 or V4 Supercharger sites enabled for non-Tesla vehicles.
  3. Park and position the charging cable.
The Ariya's charge port is on the front-right fender. Pull into a stall where the cable can reach. V4 Superchargers have longer cables.
  4. Connect the Velectr NACS to CCS1 adapter.
Attach the adapter to the Tesla Supercharger cable's NACS plug. The adapter clicks securely into place.
  5. Plug the adapter into your Ariya's CCS1 port.
Open the charge port door and insert the adapter.
  6. Start the session in the MyNISSAN app.
Open the MyNISSAN app and tap to start the charging session. The app communicates with the NISSAN ENERGY Charge Network to authenticate and begin charging. You'll see the session status update in the app and on the vehicle dashboard.
  7. Monitor charging from the vehicle or app.
Charging status appears on the vehicle screen and the MyNISSAN app.
  8. Once charging is complete.
Stop the session via the MyNISSAN app, the vehicle screen, or the charge port button. Disconnect the adapter from the vehicle first, then remove the adapter from the Tesla handle, then replace the Tesla handle in the charging station.

Nissan Tesla Supercharger Billing: How Payment Works

Nissan uses the MyNISSAN app and NISSAN ENERGY Charge Network to manage Tesla Supercharger sessions:

  • The MyNISSAN app communicates with the Supercharger to authorize your session
  • Your stored payment method in the MyNISSAN app is charged directly
  • Session details (kWh delivered, cost, duration) appear in the MyNISSAN app

Unlike true Plug & Charge vehicles, you need to tap to start in the MyNISSAN app each time—but it's quick and straightforward. Make sure the app is updated and your payment method is current before road trips.

What Charging Speeds to Expect

The Nissan Ariya uses a 400V architecture:

  • Ariya with 63 kWh battery: Up to 130 kW peak DC fast charging
  • Ariya with 87 kWh battery: Up to 130 kW peak DC fast charging

At Tesla V3 Superchargers (250 kW max), the Ariya won't be limited by the charger—it'll charge at or near its own peak rate of up to 130 kW. Because the Ariya uses 400V architecture, there's no voltage conversion penalty at V3 stations.

Expect the 87 kWh Ariya to go from 10% to 80% in approximately 35–45 minutes.

Tesla Supercharging Membership (Optional Cost Savings)

Non-Tesla EV owners typically pay a higher per-kWh rate at Superchargers compared to Tesla vehicle owners. However, you can unlock Tesla owner pricing by purchasing a Supercharging Membership through the Tesla app.

Here's how it works:

  • Tesla charges non-members a premium per-kWh rate (typically 10–25% higher)
  • The Supercharging Membership gives you the same per-kWh rate Tesla owners pay
  • One membership covers all vehicles on your Tesla account

How to sign up:

  1. Open the Tesla app
  2. Go to Charging
  3. Select Membership
  4. Follow the prompts to subscribe

Is the membership worth it? If you Supercharge more than 2–3 times per month, the savings will likely exceed the membership cost.

Troubleshooting Common Issues

  • Session won't start?
Make sure the NISSAN ENERGY Charge Network is activated in your MyNISSAN app. Try a different stall. Verify your payment method is valid.
  • Charging speed seems slow?
The Ariya maxes out at ~130 kW regardless of charger capability. If speeds are well below that, check battery temperature (cold batteries charge slower) and state of charge (speeds taper above 80%).
  • Adapter won't connect?
Ensure the adapter is fully seated on the Tesla cable. Don't force it. Check for debris.
  • Cable won't reach?
The Ariya's front-right charge port works well with pull-in stalls. Try different orientations if needed. V4 stations have longer cables.

⚡ Paying ~$0.35/kWh at Superchargers? Charge at home for ~$0.12/kWh.

Most Nissan Ariya owners do 80% of their charging at home. If you have a Tesla Wall Connector or Destination Charger, the Velectr NACS to J1772 Adapter ($99.99) lets you plug in overnight — no app, no session fees. It pays for itself in weeks.

Important Tips for Nissan Ariya Owners

  • Set up MyNISSAN before you need it.
Don't wait until you're at a Supercharger. Activate the NISSAN ENERGY Charge Network at home.
  • Your 400V architecture is an advantage at V3 stations.
Unlike 800V vehicles, the Ariya gets its full charging speed at V3 Superchargers with no voltage conversion loss.
  • Pre-condition in cold weather.
The Ariya's battery heats up during driving, which helps charging speed. Plan your route so you arrive at the Supercharger after some highway driving.
  • Don't charge past 80%.
    Speeds drop significantly above 80%.
  • Carry your adapter.
Keep the Velectr NACS to CCS1 adapter in the car at all times.

Where the Velectr Adapter Fits In

The Velectr NACS to CCS1 adapter bridges the physical connection between Tesla's NACS Supercharger cable and your Ariya's CCS1 port. The adapter is a passive connector—your vehicle and the Supercharger negotiate speed, power, and authentication directly. Nissan recommends their own $235 OEM adapter, but any NACS-to-CCS1 adapter that meets the electrical spec works identically. The Velectr adapter is rated for 500A at 1000V—the same DC fast-charging conditions your Ariya operates under.
